First time in the Caves

We had such a great time with our friends over the weekend. Chris and Chanley, like us, enjoy a healthy amount of adventure in their lives. On Saturday we packed up the kids, a picnic lunch and hit the road for a scenic 2 hour drive to Cave City, KY. Our first stop was, of course, Dinosaur World. Ever since our first trip there Griffin has been asking when we could take Jake there, so Saturday we made good on that promise.
They had the best time running through the trail, identifying the dinosaurs, digging for fossils, the playground...Jake and Griffin are both 4 yr. old experts! After that adventure went so well, we decided to try another one...we headed across the street to the Onyx Cave for a cave tour. Now, only Chanley had been to a cave before but we all had an idea in our mind what it would be like. We pictured a wide mouthed, large, cavernous, dark, damp, cold bat filled dome. This cave was nothing like that.
The stairs from below.
It was small, cramped, mostly dry, warm space that could only be seen by navigating oneself up and down steep flights of small rusted rickety staircases with huge gaps between the support beams. It was crazy, each one of us holding on tightly to a kid (Bruce had Lucy in a front carrier so I had Griffin duty) helping them get through. I had a moment of panic, claustrophobia perhaps, with visions of Griffin's sweaty hand slipping through my grasp and him falling down into the dark abyss. I really had to swallow the fear and keep moving on. As we exited the cave Griff kept saying, that was great, that was so fun, when can we do that again??? The kids were all very brave!
We all had such a good time together. The Webbers are such a lovely family, we hope to do it again soon!! We will all miss the bunches, but Griffin already misses Jake the most!!
